nissin cup noodle seafood: marine layered

Cup Noodle Seafood Noodle is the Rolls Royce of the Nissin Cup Noodle line. Well, make that the Integra Type-R, a fully loaded Japanese classic with sleek curves and quality manufactured components.

The only Cup Noodle variant readily available (on import at least) in both regular and “BIG” sizes, Seafood Noodle is one of the most popular instant noodles on the market.

One slurp and it’s easy to see why. The shio-based soup is lighter and less oily than Original Cup Noodle shoyu; it’s overwhelmingly crabby in flavor, yet mellow with a hint of sweetness akin to the seafood & shio ramen traditions of Hokkaido in Northern Japan.

Loaded with rehydrated scrambled eggs and surimi (imitation crab meat), Seafood Ramen is also reminiscent of kanitama ramen, an infrequent but entertaining assari-kei menu option in which a gigantic crab omlette, often the diamter of the bowl, is laid out atop one’s order of noodles. Surprisingly, Nissin has included slivers of real squid in the mix of toppings, although they rehydrate into something closer to squid jerky, slightly tough and uncompromising. I guess otherwise it would just be called “Crab” flavor, which - if memory serves me - was indeed a very similar item, marketed in the States, about a decade ago.

The noodles themselves are your standard, ribbon-like Cup Noodle strands. They cook up on the soft side, but maintain a fluffy consistency that pairs well with the light broth. I would venture that it’s even okay to let regular Seafood Ramen sit for a while before eating (past the three minute mark, gasp!). You get a little more heft out of the snack, and in this case, the slightly soggy noodles complement the light, sweet soup. Or you can just go “BIG” like I do.

I still prefer to make the RAMEN by myself. It’s a lot of work, but also a whole lot of fun. But thanks for tasting !

found one website where you can purchase it, but it’s in pound not US dollar. At least they’re not out of stock though. smile
