unidentified floating objects in the nevada desert

A friend just sent me this picture of a fourteen dollar bowl of ramen she slurped down in Vegas at the MGM Hotel’s Grand Wok & Sushi Bar during CES last week. If a top flight Japanese ramen shop were to open in L.A., heck I’d pay $40 for a bowl. But fourteen bucks for this? I’ll stick to the buffets and 99 cent shrimp cocktails next time I’m out in the desert. At least “the egg was yummy,” she testified.

I remember at the Stardust Hotel in 1990 I had a $3.95 bowl of “Sapporo Ichiban” at 3 AM. It was, in fact, I think Sapporo Ichiban brand of instant ramen, all gussied up with additional ingredients (bbq pork, mushrooms, egg, bok choy).

It was probably the best thing I’ve ever eaten in Vegas.

Vegas is a royal ripoff nowadays for room and board. What happened to the 99-cent shrimp cocktails and 75-cent Heinekens, not to mention the funking-gross-but-I-don’t-give-a-damn-because-it’s-dirt-cheap buffets?

There is one stand alone ramen place in Vegas, if you can manage to pull yourself off the strip and it’s petrie dish buffets.

Togoshi Ramen
855 E Twain Ave # 107 (Twain and Swenson)
Las Vegas, NV 89109
702-737-7003

Not super deluxe great but pretty decent.  Their ramen for $6 to $9 a bowl.  Other japanese small eats too.

Someone scanned in a menu.  Not sure how old the menu is.  I have not be in Vegas, and Togoshi, recently.

If you are driving from LA, there is a Japanese restaurant that has ramen in the fashion mall food court in Primm, NV called Cafe Koraku.  Never been to it.

Cafe Koraku is the same owner as Koraku in Little Tokyo in LA. I think the Koraku in LA had -decent- bowls of ramen, but with all these other ramen joints opening up in that area, I am sure they have trouble bringing in people for their ramen. The Cafe Koraku tasted pretty much the same as the main store from what I recall. You probably won’t find much better in that area between LA and Vegas.
