I burned a teflon pan real bad trying to cook mochi last week. My mom used to make it on some wire thing. What’s the best way to make it in a pan (or is there a microwave way where its still crispy on the outside?)

the wire thing sounds like your mom’s way of barbecuing them, japanese style. i’m not sure about the inherently explosive properties of mochi, but i’d definitely recommend against microwaving. you can also get that yummy brownness from a toaster oven.

there a way to do it with no toaster over?
the wire thingy sounds cheaper than a toaster oven. i think i eat mochi only every couple years, just been craving it lately

you can probably ghetto it with the little wire grill (available from the j-supermarkets) and somehow rig it over your stove. i think i’ve seen it done before. just don’t burn down your house.

A pan is not a bad apparatus to cook mochi on, if one wants to cook ‘nori-wrapped butter mochi,’ as my mother used to make for me. Just melt a pad of butter on a frying pan and put the mochi in. When the mochi browns on one side, flip it over. Dip the finished product in a soy sauce and sugar mixture, and then wrap with a piece of nori (dried seaweed). Voila. Buon Appetito!

Otherwise, rameniac’s suggestion should work…
