i am having a sushi party soon. any ideas for things that go well with sushi that are quickly made and easily served to a bunch of people who are probably going to be eating while standing?

got this so far: miso soup, fruits and veggies cut to look crazy, seaweed salad, cucumber salad, chicken & potato curry with rice, a cake shaped like a sushi.

You could turn your seaweed salad into a hawaiian poki style salad. A quick and dirty version would be fresh seaweed, lettuce (the nice stuff and NOT iceberg...aka green leaf shredded), tuna or yellowtail (if you’re a high roller), green onions, sesame oil, shoyu, and maybe some sesame seeds. Go sparingly on the sauce mixture and it should be nice. People can eat it straight up or over sushi rice.

You could also go the route like a Corean restaurant and get a bunch of pickled items or tsukemono.

You may also want some cooked items for those people who eat raw stuff (cough...pirikara...cough). Or, you could go Gonpachi-style and mix your sushi party with chicken skewers or some zaru soba and dipping sauce.

i second the chicken skewers notion. can do them over a regular barbecue, cut regular bbq skewers or get mini-ones that are about 8 inches long. just add a little salt or teriyaki sauce if you don’t have access to an asian supermarket and serve with shichimi, that japanese chili powder you can get a yoshinoya beef bowl. goooood stuff!

Oh duh, totally forgot. No party is complete without PRETZ. The “salad” and “beer” ones are the best. Stay away from the “tomato” version. It’s always good to have some snacks around and these would go along...I’m assuming there will be beer at this get together.

Or, if you want to be really cute then you can get some OTOTO. It’s basically sea-life shaped animal crackers. So, cute shaped whales, cuttlefish, crabs, octopii, and seastars (don’t call them starfish cuz they’re not fish). They’re really “light” and very tasty.

Both are available at your local Nijiya or Mitsuwa japanese markets.

Instead of just teri sauce for the chicken I’d suggest Yoshida’s marinade instead.  I know from first hand experience people go crazy for the stuff.

Similar to the poke mentioned above would be to cube the tuna (or yellowtail) and combine with diced avocado, a little shoyu (and maybe wasabi mixed in) and some nori strips sprinkled on top. We make that every so often. Small bowls and cheap hashi or even toothpicks would work.

chicken skewers i think can be done. ive never used the bbq at my place but maybe i can talk someone into doing that part for me.

salads im prolly gonna keep fish-less so my anti-fish friends can eat it too (and so i dont have to watch it for freshness). i like the adding sesame seeds idea though

ive seen tomato prez but not the other ones- ill look harder. we’re probably doing vodka and rum drinks, plum wine, and sake though, not beer. the sea animal crackers go really well with the penguin theme.
