This is assuming each is allowed to only use their original mecha that they piloted. So, in the case of Amuro Rei, that would be the original Gundam RX-78. For Ichijo Hikaru, that would be the Valkyrie VF-1J. I will also accept the VF-1S (Roy Focker version) since he got to ride that by the end of the series.

And yes, Ichijo is allowed to listen to Minmay sing “Ai oboeteimasuka” while fighting. If you know him as Rick Hunter from the bastardized Carl Macek butchered Robotech series then he may listen to “We Will Win” while he’s fighting. Of course, Amuro would be allowed to listen to the original Gundam theme song “Tobe! Gundam by Koh Ikeda.

If you vote, please feel free to justify your choice.

That was a toughy but in the end I gave it to Amuro.  I’m going to assume a cage fight--meaning that the VF’s ability to fly away from the jump-jetted RX-78 is limited.

From an armament perspective the VF has the head canons, the rifle, and 16 wing mounted missles (five missles in the box launcher and three on the pylon for each wing).  The RX-78 has the Vulcan head canon, beam rifle, and energy sabre.  As an added bonus the Gundam also sports a shield.

I think the combination of the sabre and shield will win the day since all the other armament on both units are single use ordinances.  As long as Amuro uses his Gundamium shield effectively to dodge the initial volley of missles he can then slice through the Valkyrie like butta.

I’ll go first and go with Amuro Rei although it’s a reluctant choice. By the end of each series, both had “grown a pair” and were actually effective in combat. The reason why I’m going with Amuro is because he had to constantly deal with a bunch of badass ace type pilots with Char Aznable, the red comet being the most feared and being his eternal rival. So, he had to adapt to different mobile suits and fighting styles which makes him a more well-rounded fighter. Although this is cheap, he also gets the advantage of having the latent psychic ability that gives him his “newtype” status.

Ichijo didn’t really have anyone he was fighting against although he did have to fight against a larger foe. Yes, you could conceivably count Quamzin Kravshera (aka Khyron) as a rival but that’s pushing it. Ichijo might make a fight out of it with his flying skills ultimately he’d have a tough time with Amuro.

It’s not a slam dunk win but I’m still going with Amuro. If this was a competition about who had better hair then (Ichijo Hikaru aka Rick Hunter) would win convincingly.

Don’t forget that if need be, Amuro can jettison the body and go Core Fighter mode if this becomes an air battle. However, I believe that the VF’s is superior in that mode. Heck, even in GERWALK mode, the VF would probably have an advantage at that point.

No Super Valkyrie or Armored Valkyrie, just the plain VF-1J?  Then most likely Amuro, since the VF-1J is somewhat limited in range weapons, and very weak in melee/hand-to-hand.  Although if Hikaru can come up with a clever way to fight using the different modes, that might make up for it.

Max could kick both their asses at the same time with a VF-1A using only the head cannon though.  :D

Would that be Max before or after he hooked up with Miria? Speaking of which, Max had some serious game to hook up with Alien chicks not unlike one James Tiberius Kirk…

I don’t think he lost a step after getting hitched, so I’d say either.

Even more impressive is the fact that, in the movie, he met Miria when she was still 50-feet tall, and he still got the hook-up.  That guy is totally my hero.  So’s Kirk, except for the whole girdle thing.
