I would like to see a review of Suzu in Japantown SF!  Their negi ramen is unconventional, but a tasty bowl all the same.

How about reviewing kimchi ramen?  Is that allowed?  Is that too fusion?

kimchi ramen counts =). there are a lot of korean places that serve the stuff and it’s still considered ramen, or “ramyun.” got a place in mind?

Has there been an official review of Hakata Ramen aka Shinsengumi? Speaking of which, the last couple of times I went there I swear the broth is not as good as it used to be. I’m sure part of it is that I’ve been exposed to better ramen and become more discriminating but I’m pretty sure the quality is not what it used to be. Badrox agress as well. Et vous?

Oh okay, ramyun, but I don’t have any restaurant recommendations.

But, I have a ramen-ya suggestion all the way in Tustin: Kairaku-Tei.  I’ve tried it years and years ago, so long ago that I can honestly say, I think I liked it.  It’s a tiny, hole-in-the-wall place.

And if you are still hungry after that, there is a really good izakaya in the next city over: Kappo Sui in Costa Mesa.  The owner Masaru-san is really nice, if you go you should meet him and tell him how much you like his restaurant, and maybe he’ll buy you a beer or give you a free dish.  I kid, I kid.

For SF Bay Area, how about Tampopo in Japan Center?  Also, never had the chance to go yet, but Norikonoko in Berkeley has some fans for basic shoyu ramen.  I can’t rely on many of the reviews I see in other places like chowhound because people who tend to post seem to have decided that a good ramen has heavy tonkotsu broth, whereas having been raised in Tokyo, I prefer a clearer shoyu-based soup.

is tampopo in sf j-town related to the ones in southern california? i feel like i may have gone there before. thanks! i’ll definitely have to look into it =).

btw if you like shoyu ramen, you’re totally in luck. have you tried kahoo in san jose? brand new shop with a super light and subtle wafu shoyu broth. it’s excellent, and quite possibly the closest i’ve gotten to japan without a 9-hour plane ride!

Yes, I saw your review of Kahoo and very much looking forward to trying it!  I think I trust your opinion much better than most since you’ve actually had good ramen in Japan.  So many reviewers are judging ramen based only on ramen they’ve had in the U.S., so their reference standard would not be the same as mine or yours!

i thought gomen was pretty good.
altho i don’t remember what i had, i *think* it was shio or tonkotsu or maybe a combination of both. the noodles are straight not swiggly, apparently it’s made fresh there?

it’s really cheap, and a gets pretty crowded at times.
here are the hours since they’re weird:
m-w: 1130-2pm
closed thursday
f-sun: 1130-2pm and dinner 530-930pm

Shin Sen Gumi or maybe Daikokuya, just because they’re places I’ve been to, and I’m curious to see how they measure up to the other places I’ve been to which you have reviewed.

I don’t know that SSG’s broth has gone downhill, so much as they’re just inconsistent.  Sometimes it’s decent, other times it’s too salty or too bland.  (For the record, I always get it maximum everything.  And I always go to the Gardena branch.  Er, the original Gardena branch, since they also have a “to go” place now, just down the street at the Marukai Pacific Market.  Now you can get Hakata ramen in the mid-afternoon!)
