I am on a campaign to get the world outside Japan to start spelling ramen as lamen, it’s correct spelling, and to get people to say the word as “la men” it’s correct way, not the Japanese mistake of RAMEN. Since the Japanese do not have a R sound or R letter in their culture, they mistakingly changed the word they took from the Chinese in China and HK and Taiwan and turned it, incorrectly I might add, into RAMEN. No way. It’s lamen, always was and always will be.

So how to get the world to wake up and say the word and spell it correctly.
In English. In nihongo, it’s fine, in katakana hiragana, fine. But not in English: ramen is wrong wrong wrong. We don’t spell LOVE as ROVE, we don’t spell LUCK as RUCK and we don’t spell Linda and Rinda, do we? So we should change ramen back to the correct way. The Japanese made a collosal mistake. it’s not too late to change it in English.

Anyone want to help with this humorous yet serious quixotic crusade? It’s not anti-Japanese. I love Japan. Been there 5 years. love to eat “ramen” there. But in NYC and LA it should be spelled Lamen and called Lamen.

Since Lamen is really spelled and pronounced with L and L sound, should we change spelling to LAMEN?

Japanese made a huge mistake when they spelled LAMEN as ramen in English. The Chinese word is pronounced LAMEN and that is what the Japanese thought they were saying, since their ABC does not have an L sound but only a R sound so they spelled the word LAMEN as “ramen” but it is totally totally wrong. Shouldn’t all lamen lovers of the world unite to get the word spelled correctly now in English. It’s LAMEN, folks, not ramen.

Do we spell language as ranguage? No.
Do we spell love as rove? No.
Do we spell Lolita as Rorita? no.
So it is time to get all English language signs, menus and books and newspaper articles to spell LAMEN correctly.

Do you spell LONDON as RONDON? No.
So what do you say, Japan? You made an innocent mistake. Now please tell the world you made a faux pas and ask everyone to spell lamen as LAMEN.

See my PR campaing notes at the forum under shop talk. I need your help.

Lamen lovers unite, you have nothing to rose but your rovely ramen spelling…

This AP story by Adam Goldberg was published the other day on the international AP wire and was reprinted all over the world. About 3/4 through the article there is a mention of rameniac.com

“Rickmond Wong, a Web designer....... has closely monitored..... He believes.....he says....Wong, who eats about 200 bowls a year...but he does have favorite: Santouka, Asa Ramen and Gardena Ramen.”

http://www.news.google.com

QUESTION for Rickmond and readers: why is RAMEN called LAMEN in Taiwan and China? With an L instead of an R?

And does everyone know that ramen was NOT an invention of the Japanese, but of a Taiwanese immigrant to Japan who first invented ramen and later formed the Nisshin company. He has a Japanese name, Momofuku Ando, but he was born in Taiwan with a Chinese name Wu Bai-fu. So RAMEN is not a Japanese “thing”, it is a Chinese “idea”, created by a Taiwanese man named Wu. Sadly, after he went to Japan, he became Japanized and ordered his PR people at Nisshin to never refer to him as Wu ever! But the world should know that Ando-san was Chinese, not Japanese. Just for the record. SMILE
Ando was born into a wealthy family in the city of Chiayi in Taiwan in
1910, when the island was under Japanese colonial rule. His first
business venture was a trading company in Taipei, before he moved to
Japan at the age of 23, to study economics at Ritsumeikan University,
Kyoto.
