iberico bar: true lard leaves no traces

thumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail image

Anyone who knows me well will likely know of my affection for Spanish cuisine, a passion which rivals and in many ways, surpasses even my love for ramen. Admittedly, I don’t eat noodles nearly as much as I used to. A steady diet of Mediterranean influence - fish and tomatoes, olive oil and beans, has replaced a lot of my gonzo noodle slurping in recent months. In part this has to do with health; all those fats and carbs have to go somewhere, and as relatively young as (I’d like to think) I am, it’s never too early to cut back on the calories and perhaps spare a few arteries in the process.

canal city raumen stadium: battle bowl royale

thumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail image
When it comes to tonkotsu ramen, Kyushu is truly king. And a rameniac in southern Japan would do well to visit Canal City, a gloriously overwrought, crescent-shaped shopping mall designed by architect Jon Jerde to invoke the American west. I couldn’t even begin to imagine why. But though ramen lovers are not necessarily modernist architecture freaks, this Fukuoka landmark houses the Canal City Raumen Stadium, also known as “Raumen Stadium 2,” kid sibling to Yokohama’s famed Raumen Museum and home to an ever-rotating assortment of top-tier ramen shops.

got beef? bring it! (ok not literally, but yea…)

This has nothing to do with ramen, but a dearly loved friend of mine is involved in organizing the first ever Korean BBQ Cook-Off in Los Angeles this Saturday, August 8th. Presented by the Korean American Coalition, the event will feature notable restaurants from around town battling to determine the best bulgogi and kalbi this side of Seoul. A panel of gastronomic luminaries will be judging the contest, and smokey marinated fun in the summer sun will most surely be had by all. I'll be there wandering around in a drunken stupor by the way; just look for the Asian guy.

mitsuwa marketplace’s kyushu & okinawa fair 2009

For those of you lucky enough to be living near a Mitsuwa Marketplace in the States, it's time once again for their Kyushu & Okinawa Fair. Ramen-wise, tonkotsu ramen specialist Tatsunoya (龍の家) from Kurume will be setting up shop 7/16 - 7/19 in Torrance and 7/23 - 7/26 in New Jersey. There's also Yamachan Nagasaki Sara Udon and Okinawa Soba doing the rounds at several locations. I'm lazy in this heat; check their schedule for details.
