iberico bar: true lard leaves no traces

thumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail imagethumbnail image

Anyone who knows me well will likely know of my affection for Spanish cuisine, a passion which rivals and in many ways, surpasses even my love for ramen. Admittedly, I don’t eat noodles nearly as much as I used to. A steady diet of Mediterranean influence - fish and tomatoes, olive oil and beans, has replaced a lot of my gonzo noodle slurping in recent months. In part this has to do with health; all those fats and carbs have to go somewhere, and as relatively young as (I’d like to think) I am, it’s never too early to cut back on the calories and perhaps spare a few arteries in the process.

maid in culver city

Okay, this isn’t precisely ramen-related, but I figured it would appeal to a fair segment of the rameniac readership. After all, ramen, anime, and cosplay go together like beans, eggs, and blood pudding in an English breakfast. So last Saturday, I had the good fortune to attend the opening of Royal T in Culver City, Los Angeles. Touted as America’s first-ever “maid cafe,” Royal T featured an exhibit of superflat artwork from the likes of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara and cosplay French maids making like it was Akihabara Electric Town during a Yodobashi Camera fire sale.

mitsuwa hokkaido fair 2009

Yep, it's time again for Mitsuwa's Hokkaido Fair. The 2009 event starts today, and this time around, your favorite stateside Japanese supermarket chain will be all about the shio. There's Ishikari's Ramen Shingen in Torrance and also Ezo-Fukuro in Costa Mesa doing a couple of versions of the stuff; next week the festival moves on across the U.S., as usual. Go here for all the details and the tour dates. These ramen shops should all just hurry up and open permanent North American branches already.

got beef? bring it! (ok not literally, but yea…)

This has nothing to do with ramen, but a dearly loved friend of mine is involved in organizing the first ever Korean BBQ Cook-Off in Los Angeles this Saturday, August 8th. Presented by the Korean American Coalition, the event will feature notable restaurants from around town battling to determine the best bulgogi and kalbi this side of Seoul. A panel of gastronomic luminaries will be judging the contest, and smokey marinated fun in the summer sun will most surely be had by all. I'll be there wandering around in a drunken stupor by the way; just look for the Asian guy.
